SYMPTOM/CONDITION
By design, Pitman arm ball joint assemblies installed on subject model vehicles built prior to December, 1983 will not normally allow excess grease to
flow into or by the dust boot during lubrication. However, this inability to force excess grease through the joint does not indicate improper lubrication
since sufficient quantities of grease will remain in the ball lube channels and the area between the ball and socket (Figure 1). Therefore, on these models
built prior to December, 1983, do not replace Pitman arm ball joints that do not accept excess grease flow into the dust boot. Replace only if worn or
otherwise damaged.

Vehicles built after December, 1983 contain modified Pitman arm ball joints that will allow grease to flow around the ball and socket and into the dust
boot (Figure 2).
