Timing Belt: Service and Repair
1.
Drain engine coolant into a suitable container.
2.
Release fuel system pressure as follows:
a.
Disconnect fuel pump connector at fuel tank.
b.
Start engine and allow to stop by its self.
c.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
Remove power steering and air conditioning compressor, leaving hoses connected.
4.
Rotate engine to position No. 1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke.

Remove timing belt in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 5, noting the following:
a.
Using an old drive belt and crankshaft holding tool No. MD998747 or equivalent, remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Belt used during this
operation will be damaged and cannot be reused.
b.
Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt then turn timing belt tensioner counterclockwise using a suitable screwdriver.
c.
If timing belt is to be reused, mark the rotational direction on timing belt for correct installation.
6.
Install timing belt tensioner and tensioner spring as follows:
a.
Install timing belt tensioner.
