SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Vehicle equipped with a Limited Slip Differential, and built before September 1989, may exhibit a chattering noise from the rear axle during slow speed
turns. This condition may be the result of the limited slip differential preload. To correct this condition, the preload torque was reduced in production by
replacing two spring discs with two spring plates.
DIAGNOSIS
Road test vehicle (preferably with owner) to verify noise complaint. Make several right and left turns at slow speeds (under 20 MPH). If a chatter occurs
during slow speed turns only, the most probable cause is the limited slip differential preload, and the following repair procedure should be performed. If
the chatter occurs at speeds above 20 MPH, the following items should be checked as possible cause of the chatter and corrected before performing any
repairs to the limited slip differential: U-joints, propeller shaft, axle shaft, wheel bearings, etc.
