SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Transmission high shift effort may be experienced in cold weather operation at ambient temperatures below 32~F (O~C). Shift effort improves as
transmission reaches normal operating temperature.
On 2WD vehicles equipped with the KM130 (R5M21) series transmission the lubricant viscosity may be the contributing factor.
On 4WD vehicles equipped with the V5MT1 series transmission the lubricant viscosity, synchronizer rings and springs may be the contributing factor.
DIAGNOSIS:
If, after a cold soak, the transmission shift effort is found to be excessive during the initial start up, and the effort improves as the transmission reaches
operating temperature, inspect the transmission in the area of the fill plug. If there is no white dab of paint just above the fill plug, perform the following
repair procedure.
A dab of white paint above the fill plug indicates the following procedure has been completed. Refer to the appropriate service manual for additional
diagnosis.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
KM130 (R5M21) SERIES TRANSMISSION (2WD).
This procedure involves draining and refilling the transmission.
1.
Remove both the fill and drain plugs, allow the fluid to drain.
2.
After the fluid has drained completely, install the drain plug and new washer PN MD000312. Tighten to 43 ft.lbs. (60 N-m) torque.
3.
Fill the transmission with the 75W/90 gear oil PN 4549624 to the bottom of the fill hole.
4.
Install the fill plug and tighten to 25 ft.lbs. (35 N-m) torque.
5.
Apply a dab of white touch-up paint on the transmission case just above the fill plug.
