SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may experience a squeak noise during front suspension jounce and rebound travel. The noise may be coming from the sway bar bushings.

DISCUSSION:

The sway bar bushings are designed so the outer bushing (on the lower control arm) allows the sway bar to rotate and plunge within the bushing. The
outer bushing inner diameter is teflon lined. The sway bar to crossmember bushing is designed to clamp the sway bar to prevent rotation of the sway bar
relative to the bushing.

NOTE:
DO NOT LUBRICATE BUSHINGS TO ELIMINATE A SQUEAK. Oil based lubricants will deteriorate the rubber and provide only a temporary "fix".
The noise will return in a short period of time after the lubricants are absorbed into the rubber. The lubricant allows the sway bar to rotate within the
bushing and often makes the noise worse.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves the proper method of checking for worn bushings.

1.

Support the vehicle by the front wheels as outlined in the appropriate service manual. Make sure that the suspension is not in a rebound position.

2.

Check the sway bar bushing retainers for proper torque of 70 N-m (50 ft.lbs.). The sway bar should also be centered from side to side. The two
inner sway bar to crossmember bushings should be oriented with the slit to the front of the vehicle.
