Charging System: Component Tests and General Diagnostics
Charging System Resistance Tests
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and "Bat" lead from alternator output terminal.

2. Complete test connections as shown.
3. Remove air hose between engine controller and air cleaner.
4. On non-turbocharged models, connect a suitable jumper wire from green (R3) terminal to ground. Do not connect blue J2 circuit to ground.
5. On turbocharged models, connect a suitable jumper wire from green R3 lead wire on dash side of black 8-way connector to ground. Do not
connect blue J2 lead of 8-way wiring connector to ground.
6. On all models, connect battery ground cable, then start engine and operate at idle.
7. Adjust engine speed and carbon pile rheostat to obtain 20 amps in circuit, then check voltmeter reading. Reading should not exceed .5 volts. If a
higher voltage drop is indicated, inspect, clean and tighten all connections in circuit. A voltage drop test at each connection can be performed to
isolate problem.
Current Output Tests
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and "Bat" lead from alternator output terminal.
