Flex Plate: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The flex plate is fastened to the crankshaft and can only be installed one way. The crankshaft has a dowel locating pin that is used to align the flex plate.
The stamped-steel flex plate has a segment ring to provide engine speed and crankshaft position information to the Engine Control Module (ECM). The
crankshaft position sensor is mounted next to the segment ring and sends electrical pulses to the ECM. The segment ring contains 58 segments and a gap
with two missing segments (the 59th and 60th) for the detection of TDC of cylinder No.1.
