Intrusion Sensor - Description
DESCRIPTION
Vehicles equipped with the optional Vehicle Theft Alarm (VTA) with interior motion detection and tow-away protection are equipped with three
intrusion sensors (3) (also known as interior protection sensors) and an inclination sensor. The intrusion sensors are designed to provide interior motion
detection. The inclination sensor is designed to provide tow-away protection. All four sensors are direct inputs to the Roof Control Module (RCM) (1)
(also known as the Overhead Control Panel/OCP control unit or DBE) located in the passenger compartment, on the lower surface of the headliner (2)
near the upper windshield opening header centered between the sun visors.
The front intrusion sensor and the integral inclination sensor are both integral to the RCM, while the center and rear intrusion sensors are stand-alone
units. The center and rear intrusion sensors (1) on vehicles without an optional rear headliner (4) are secured within individual molded plastic brackets
that are secured by screws to the center or rear roof cross bows. On vehicles equipped with the rear headliner option, the center and rear intrusion sensors
are secured to mounting holes in the headliner substrate. The molded plastic sensor housing is visible below the bracket or the headliner, and has three
sensor transducer clearance holes (3), each with a black plastic grille-like protective cover.
The center and rear intrusion sensor circuitry, which includes a microprocessor and the ultrasonic transmit and receive transducers, are concealed within
the molded plastic housing and above the mounting bracket or the headliner. Molded plastic retaining tabs are integral to each side of the sensor housing.
A notch (2) on one side of the sensor housing affords access for service removal of the sensor from the bracket or the headliner. A single molded
connector receptacle integral to the sensor housing connects the sensor to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out of the vehicle wire
harness. Concealed within the housing is the electronic circuitry of the sensor
An intrusion sensor or inclination sensor cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if ineffective or damaged, it must be replaced. The front sensor and
inclination sensor are serviced only as a unit with the RCM. The center and rear sensors and their mounting brackets are available for individual service
replacement.
