Interior Lighting Module: Description and Operation
Description
DESCRIPTION
Cargo vans equipped with an optional interior lighting package include a motion detector (3). The motion detector is designed to provide a signal when
motion is detected within the load compartment of the vehicle. The detector is a direct input to the Body Control Module (BCM) (also known as the
Signal Acquisition and Actuation Module/SAM) located beneath the driver side end of the instrument panel in the passenger compartment, where it is
secured to the fuse and relay block (also known as the SRB).
The interior lighting motion detector is an infrared-based sensor. On vehicles without an optional rear headliner it is secured within a molded plastic
bracket (4) that is secured by screws to the center (5) or rear roof cross bows. On vehicles equipped with the rear headliner option, the motion detector is
secured to a mounting hole in the headliner substrate. Only the translucent red lens of the sensor is visible below the bracket or the headliner.
The motion detector Light Emitting Diode (LED) units, photodiodes and circuitry are contained within a molded plastic housing that is concealed above
the mounting bracket or the headliner. Molded plastic retaining tabs are integral to each side of the detector housing. A notch on one side of the detector
lens affords access for service removal of the detector from the bracket or the headliner. A single molded connector receptacle integral to the detector
housing connects the detector to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out of the vehicle wire harness. Concealed within the housing is
the electronic circuitry of the detector which includes a microprocessor, and the infrared transmit and receive transducers.
A motion detector cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if ineffective or damaged, it must be replaced. The motion detector and the mounting bracket are
available for individual service replacement.
