Rain Sensor: Description and Operation

OPERATION

The rain/light sensor operates on battery current and ground received from the Roof Control Module (RCM) (also known as the Overhead Control
Panel/OCP control unit or DBE) whenever the RCM detects that the ignition switch is in the ON position. The rain/light sensor contains InfraRed (IR)
diodes that direct IR light beams at the windshield at an angle. When the windshield glass is dry, most of this IR light is reflected back to the sensor,
which uses photodiode receivers to measure the intensity of the light. When moisture accumulates on the windshield glass, much of the IR light is
refracted away from the photodiode receivers. This causes changes in the signal output of the rain/light sensor. These same photodiode receivers also
measure the intensity of the light falling on the sensor through the windshield glass.

The RCM monitors the signal outputs from the sensor and then places electronic messages indicating the rain/light sensor outputs on the Controller Area
Network (CAN) data bus for use by other electronic modules in controlling the front and rear wiper systems as well as the exterior and interior lighting
systems. It is important to note that the default condition for the automatic wiper and lighting systems are OFF; therefore, if no electronic messages are
received from the rain/light sensor by the RCM, these automatic features will be disabled. However, normal manual operation of each of these systems
will be unaffected.

The hard wired rain/light sensor circuits may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic tools and procedures. However, conventional diagnostic
methods will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the rain/light sensor or the electronic controls and communication that provide some features of the
automatic wiper and lighting systems. Proper diagnosis of the rain/light sensor, the RCM, the CAN data bus and the electronic communication related to
rain/light sensor operation requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information.
