Rain Sensor: Description and Operation
Description
DESCRIPTION
The rain/light sensor (2) provides the primary input for the optional automatic wiper system, as well as for the optional automatic features of the exterior
and interior lighting systems. The rain/light sensor is located on the inside of the windshield below the inside rear view mirror (1), where it is concealed
by a molded plastic trim cover (3) that snaps over the ring-like molded plastic sensor mounting bracket that is glued onto the inside of the windshield
glass.
The rain/light sensor is contained within a circular molded black plastic housing with an integral connector receptacle that exits one side of the housing.
A short dedicated take out of the overhead wire harness that extends from above the headliner connects the rain/light sensor to the vehicle electrical
system and the Roof Control Module (RCM) (also known as the Overhead Control Panel/OCP control unit or DBE). A molded plastic trough routes and
conceals the pigtail wires on the inside of the windshield between the rear view mirror base and the headliner.
The windshield side of the rain/light sensor housing is open, but covered with a clear silicone material that protects the internal electronic sensor circuitry
and serves as the lens for the InfraRed (IR) diodes and photocells within the sensor housing.
The rain/light sensor cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if damaged or ineffective, the entire sensor must be replaced.
