Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Testing and Inspection

Remove the engine Coolant Temperature Sensor from the intake manifold.

Checking The Coolant Temperature Sensor Resistance

Using alligator clips, connect an ohmmeter to the sensor terminals.

Immerse the sensing element in hot water, being careful not to set the housing in the water. This would alter the resistance reading.

4.

Resistance should decrease, as the temperature increases. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS/ELECTRICAL.
If the resistance deviates from the standard value, replace the sensor.

Checking For Voltage To Coolant Temperature Sensor

If the test results are within specifications, verify that voltage is getting to the sensor.

5.

Connect a voltmeter to the vehicle side of the sensor's connector.

6.

Turn the ignition switch ON.
Voltage should be indicated on the voltmeter.

NOTE:  When installing the coolant sensor, apply 3M NUT locking sealant to the threaded portion and torque to specifications.
