Vehicle Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

NOTE:  Two types of Vehicle Speed Sensors are used for the Stealth. 
Non-turbo model vehicles use a mechanical VSS which is  mounted in the rear of the instrument cluster.
Turbo equipped vehicles mount the Electrical VSS on the transmission.

MECHANICAL VSS

1.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is mounted on the rear of the instrument panel. Refer to COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR
PROCEDURES/VSS for procedures in removing the instrument panel.

Mechanical Speedometer Reed Switch Test

2.

Connect an ohmmeter between the reed switch and the reed switch ground.

3.

Turn the speedometer shaft using a small screwdriver.
Continuity should exist/not exist several times while the shaft is being rotated.

ELECTRICAL VSS - TURBO

1.

Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Connect a voltmeter to terminals # 2 and # 3 of the VSS.
