SRS - Diagnostic Code Set With Discharged Battery

DISCUSSION:
A discharged battery, or a battery with low voltage may set a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Diagnostic Code. When the ignition key is on, the
SRS control unit's diagnostic function monitors the system (battery) voltage. If the voltage supplied to the SRS is low for any reason, the control unit will
continuously illuminate the SRS warning light when the key is the on position.
Depending on the system voltage, the control unit can store codes 32, 41, and/or 42. The code descriptions are:
32 - The control units internal capacitor voltage is below normal.
41 - Ignition voltage circuit # 1 is below normal.
42 - Ignition voltage circuit # 2 is below normal.
It is important to determine if the vehicle had a discharged battery. If fault codes 32, 41, and/or 42 are present and the battery was recently discharged,
use the following service procedure to erase the diagnostic codes. If the SRS warning light illuminates during normal driving conditions and any code is
stored, including 32, 41, and 42, refer to the troubleshooting procedure outlined in the appropriate diagnostic manual.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Before charging the battery, always turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the key from the ignition switch. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable
to avoid possible damage to sensitive electronic components.
Failure to turn the ignition switch OFF when the negative (-) battery cable is removed will cause the SRS warning light to illuminate continuously.
If the battery charger is on when connecting the charger cables to the battery, a spark may occur and cause gases in the battery to ignite, causing severe
damage and/or personal injury.

Recharge the battery.
2.
Reconnect the negative battery (-) cable.
3.
Cycle the ignition key ON then OFF at least ten times to clear codes 41 and 42 from the system's memory.
4.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Observe the SRS warning lamp. If the SRS warning lamp goes out after about seven seconds, no further
action is necessary. If the SRS lamp does not turn off after about seven seconds, the following procedure must be followed.
1.
Turn the ignition key OFF. Connect DRB-II.
2.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position. If code 32 is stored erase it using DRBII.
3.
Turn the ignition key OFF.
