Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
1. Disarm airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.
2. Center front wheels and remove ignition key.
WARNING: Failure to do so may damage SRS clock spring and render the SRS system inoperative, risking serious injury.
3. Drain power steering fluid from system.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove front exhaust pipe and main muffler assembly.
6. Remove transfer case assembly, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Manual Transmission/Transaxle/Service and Repair.
7. Remove steering column to steering gear pinch bolt.
8. Separate tie rod ends from steering knuckle assemblies.

9. Support engine and transaxle assembly with transmission jack, then remove left member and right member.
10. Disconnect pressure lines from steering gear assembly.
11. Remove steering gear retaining clamps, then steering gear.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check steering wheel position with wheels straight ahead for correct installation.
b. Align front wheels to specification.
c. Bleed power steering system.
d. Enable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING/DISARMING.
