5. On all models, check final drive gear tooth contact as follows:
a. Apply a thin, uniform coat of machine blue to both surfaces of drive gear teeth as shown.
b. Insert a brass rod between differential carrier and differential case, then rotate companion flange by hand (once in normal direction, and once
in reverse direction) while applying a load to drive gear, so that revolution torque applied to the drive pinion is approximately 28-33 lb-in.
c. Compare and adjust tooth contact pattern as shown.
d. If correct tooth pattern cannot be obtained by adjustment, drive gear and drive pinion have exceeded their wear limit and both gears should be
replaced as a set.
