Vehicle Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection
Sensor Operation Tests
Troubleshooting Hint: If there is an open or short circuit in the Vehicle Speed Sensor signal circuit, the engine may stall when the vehicle is decelerated
to stop.
Vehicle Speed Sensor (Electrical Type)
1. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor.
Electrical Speed Sensor Test
2. Connect a voltmeter to terminals # 2 and # 3 of the VSS.
3. Connect the negative lead from the battery to terminal # 2 of the VSS.
4. Connect the positive lead from the battery to a 3-10k ohm resistor and a lead wire from the resistor to terminal # 3 of the VSS.
5. Connect a second lead wire from the positive terminal of the battery to terminal # 1 of the VSS.
As the pulse generator shaft is rotated, voltage should be indicated on the voltmeter 4 times per shaft revolution.
6. If the test results deviate from above, replace the VSS Sensor.
