Hydraulic Control Unit: Service and Repair
1. Remove remote ground cable from ground stud located on left strut tower. Isolate ground cable to prevent accidental grounding.

2. Use a brake pedal positioning tool as shown, and depress brake pedal past its first inch of travel and hold in this position. This will isolate the
master cylinder reservoir from the brake hydraulic system.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Using brake parts cleaner, clean entire surface of hydraulic control unit (HCU) and all brake tubes connected to hydraulic unit.
5. Remove exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold attaching bolts.
6. Remove exhaust system supports from exhaust system, then the complete exhaust system from vehicle.
7. Disconnect 6-way electrical connector from HCU wiring harness and 10-way electrical connector from HCU relay box.
8. Remove brake tubing routing clip from HCU mounting bracket, then the brake tubes from master cylinder, left front wheel and right front wheel.
9. Remove two rear brake tubes from proportioning valves mounted on top of HCU.
10. Remove bolt attaching front of HCU to its mounting bracket.

11. Remove two bolts attaching rear of HCU to its mounting bracket.
12. Remove HCU from its mounting bracket.
13. Remove HCU from vehicle through exhaust tunnel in floor pan.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque HCU mounting bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
b. Torque brake tube fittings to 13 ft. lbs.
c. Bleed brake system as described under Antilock Brake System/Service and Repair/Brake System Bleed.
