White Flakes from A/C Evaporator
MODELS:
1995 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
White flakes in the forward passenger compartment especially the instrument panel. Flakes appear to be coming from the A/C, defroster, and heater
outlets.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves blowing/flushing the existing flakes from the A/C evaporator.
1.
Turn A/C blower on high and cycle mode knob to each position. Repeat this procedure in fresh air and re-circulation modes.
2.
Record radio settings, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
3.
Remove right lower heat distribution duct.
4.
Remove blower motor cover and blower motor.
5.
Remove resistor.
6.
Disconnect evaporator temperature probe connector but do not remove probe from evaporator.
7.
Place all removed parts outside of vehicle. Tape or stuff all connectors up high so they will not get wet if water drains from HVAC housing.
8.
Use a siphon spray blow gun (Milton P/N 5157 or equivalent). Connect a rubber hose to the outlet nozzle (11/32" transmission hose or
equivalent). The hose should be a least 16" long with a 90 degree bend 1" from one end. Insert the end with the 90 degree bend through the blower
motor hole in the HVAC housing. Hold the hose close to the face of the evaporator. During the next two steps, move the hose no faster than 1" per
second back and forth across the evaporator face until the entire face has been sprayed. A mirror may be used to see the entire face of the
evaporator.
9.
First blow out the evaporator with shop air and no water. Do not dip the siphon hose in the water during this step.
10.
Next blow out the evaporator with shop air and water. Use an absorbent material on the carpet and a drain pan under the drip tube to catch water.
11.
Soak up water that accumulates inside the unit around the resistor access hole using a sponge. Be sure this area is completely dry or electrical
problems may result.
12.
Install blower motor and blower motor cover.
13.
Install resistor.
14.
Connect electrical connectors for blower motor, resistor, and temperature probe.
15.
Install right lower heat distribution duct.
16.
Install negative battery cable and set radio stations and clock.
17.
Repeat Step 1 to assure proper operation of all HVAC functions and to blow out any residual flakes.
18.
Vacuum flakes from passenger compartment and instrument panel.
