Front Stabilizer Bushing Noise
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting front suspension components and if necessary replacing the bushings with revised components.
MODELS:
2001 (ST) Sebring/Stratus Coupe
NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO OCT. 4, 2000.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A creaking, popping, or metallic clang sound may be heard from the front end. The sound is most likely to occur at low speeds while braking hard or
when accelerating briskly from a stop and may be caused by the front stabilizer bar moving in the mounting bushings.
DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR PROCEDURES:
It is important to note the circumstances under which the sound is heard so after repairs are made they can be confirmed for effectiveness. If the exact
location of the sound cannot be determined, check the installation of all front suspension related components (including the cross-member) for wear,
damage and installation torque.If the suspension system checks OK, perform the Repair Procedure.
NOTE:
ALWAYS REFER TO THE SEBRING/STRATUS COUPE SERVICE MANUAL P/N 81-270-1018 (VOLUME ONE) WHEN INSPECTING AND
TIGHTENING SUSPENSION COMPONENTS.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2.
Remove the pre-load from the stabilizer mounting bushings by detaching both ends of the stabilizer bar from the end links.
3.
Wrap or tape both ends of the stabilizer bar to prevent contact to any suspension or body component.
4.
Remove the vehicle from the hoist and carefully drive the vehicle in a manner that produced the original sound. If the noise is no longer present,
the bushings are the likely cause.
5.
Return the vehicle to the hoist and replace both bushings p/n MR589815 (2.4L models) or p/n MR589817 (3.0L models). Follow the procedures
listed in the Sebring/Stratus Coupe service manual p/n 81-270-1018 (volume 1 pages 2A-15 and 16).
6.
Re-assemble the vehicle and verity that the sound is eliminated.
