Rattle/Squeak From The Center Of The Lower Instrument Panel

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves repositioning the 6-disc CD changer and installing two pieces of flocked tape to the trim bezel around the CD changer.

NOTE:

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT WITH A 6-DISC CD CHANGER (SALES CODE RDN) JULY 15, 2002 (MDH 0715XX)
THROUGH AND INCLUDING AUGUST 14, 2002 (MDH 0814XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A road input induced rattle/squeak sound from the lower center stack area of the instrument panel. The rattle/squeak sound is more noticeable with
higher interior temperatures (43°C+ / 110°F+).

DIAGNOSIS:
Use a plastic trim stick to remove the CD changer bezel, if the rattle/squeak sound is eliminated with the bezel removed, perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1.

Inspect the fit between the 6-disc CD changer and the changer trim bezel. Note any place where there is a "witness" mark on the outer
circumference of the changer faceplate caused by contact with the bezel.

2.

Loosen both fasteners on the changer and position the CD changer as required to eliminate any contact noted in step one.

3.

Tighten the left changer fastener first. Tighten both fasteners to 2-3 Nm (20-28 in. lbs.).

4.

Cut two 1/2 by 1 in. strips from flocked tape, p/n 05019055AA and install it over the bottom two clips on the changer bezel. The flocked tape will
help eliminate fore/aft freeplay between the changer bezel and the instrument panel retainer.

5.

Install the changer bezel and verify the rattle/squeak sound was been eliminated.
