Oxygen Sensor: Service and Repair

WARNING:  Exhaust manifold becomes very hot during engine operation.

CAUTION:  The oxygen sensor has a permanently attached wire and connector. This should not be removed or pulled on, as any change in circuit
resistance will affect engine performance and emissions.

CAUTION:  Excessive force may damage threads in exhaust manifold or pipe.

1. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
2. Using a suitable tool (tool # C-4907 or equivalent), carefully remove the sensor from exhaust manifold or pipe. The oxygen sensor may be easier

to remove when engine temperature is above 120°F.

3. Clean threads in exhaust manifold with an 18 mm X 1.5 + 6E tap.
4. If a new sensor is being used, verify that the threads are coated with anti-seize compound, before installing in manifold or pipe.

NOTE:  Do not use graphite based anti-seize compounds.

5. If a used sensor is being installed, coat sensor threads with a nickel based anti-seize compound (Loctite 771-64 or equivalent), then install sensor

in manifold or pipe.

6. Torque sensor to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs), connect wiring.
