Correctly Installed Brake Shoe
7. After the support pins are fully installed into the caliper assembly. Inspect assembled caliper to be sure the spring clip is centered in the opening of
the caliper and is resting against both brake shoe assemblies.
8. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then
repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove jackstands or lower hoist. Before moving vehicle, pump the brake pedal several times to insure the vehicle has a firm brake pedal to
adequately stop vehicle.
10. Road test the vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on the brakes, and to seat the brake shoe linings.
Cleaning and Inspection
BRAKE SHOE LINING WEAR
If a visual inspection does not adequately determine the condition of lining (friction material) on the front brake shoes, a physical check will be
necessary. This will require that the brake shoe assemblies be removed from the front caliper.
The brake shoe friction material thickness is to be measured at the thinnest point of the friction material.
The minimum front brake shoe assembly friction material thickness is 2.5 mm (0.100 inch). When the brake shoe friction material reaches the
minimum thickness, the front brake shoes must be replaced.
When the front brake shoes are replaced, only brake shoes meeting the Original Equipment Manufacturer material formulation should be used. This is
required to maintain the original braking performance of this vehicle. See Specifications for the replacement brake lining requirements.
Replace both brake shoes (inboard and outboard) on both front wheels of the vehicle whenever the brake shoes on either side of the vehicle require
replacement.
