Brake Pad: Service and Repair
Chamfering
Remove front or rear brake shoes from the vehicle.
FRONT SHOES
Front Brake Shoes
1. Place each shoe so the brake pad material is facing upward as shown. Use this figure as a reference for the following steps.
2. Using a pencil, mark point "A" at the top of shoe pad face where it contacts the disc. Do this to both ends (leading and trailing) of the pad.
3. Measure up 6 mm (1/4 inch) from the shoe plate on each end of the shoe pad, and mark the pad with a pencil at point "C".
4. Above point "C", measure across the face of the shoe pad 11 mm (7/16 inch), and mark the pad at point "B".
5. Using a straight edge and a pencil, mark the triangular pattern "A-B-C" laid out in the above steps.
6. Using a file or grinder, remove the pad material in the "A-B-C" triangular areas on each end of the shoe pad.
7. Repeat the procedure to the remaining front brake pads.
8. Reinstall the brake shoes on the vehicle.
