Powertrain Control Module: Service and Repair
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
The PCM engine control strategy prevents reduced idle speeds until after the engine operates for 320 km (200 miles). If the PCM is replaced after
320 km (200 miles) of usage, update the mileage and vehicle identification number (VIN) in the new PCM. Use the DRB scan tool to change the
mileage and VIN in the PCM. If this step is not done a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set. Refer to the appropriate Powertrain
Diagnostics and the DRB scan tool.
PCM Location
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is mounted underhood next to the heater motor blower housing.
REMOVAL
To avoid possible voltage spike damage to PCM, ignition key must be off, and the negative battery cable must be disconnected before unplugging
the PCM connectors. Note radio programs.
1. Disconnect positive cable from PDC.
2. Remove cover.
3. Remove three connector from PCM.
4. Remove PCM mounting screws. Remove PCM.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the three connector to PCM.
2. Install PCM and tighten screws.
3. Install cover and tighten screws.
4. Connect positive battery cable at PDC and reprogram radio and clock.
5. Using DRB scan tool, program mileage and vehicle identification number (VIN) into PCM. Refer to the DRB scan tool and the appropriate
Powertrain Diagnostics.
Important Note:
If the Powertrain Control Module has been changed and the correct VIN and mileage have not been programmed, a DTC will be set in the ABS
and Air bag modules. In addition, if the vehicle is equipped with a Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), Secret Key data must be updated to
enable starting.
For ABS and Air Bag Systems:
1. Enter correct VIN and Mileage in PCM.
2. Erase codes in ABS and Air Bag modules.
For SKIM Theft Alarm:
1. Connect the DRB III or equivalent scan tool to the data link connector.
2. Go to Theft Alarm, SKIM, Misc. and place the SKIM in secured access mode, by using the appropriate PIN code for this vehicle.
3. Select Update the Secret Key data, data will be transferred from the SKIM to the PCM (This is required to allow the vehicle to start with the
new PCM).
