Steering Shaft: Service and Repair
Intermediate Shaft - Removal
REMOVAL
NOTE: Review all Warnings and Cautions. See: Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect negative (-) cable from battery and isolate cable.
2. Secure steering wheel in STRAIGHT-AHEAD position using a steering wheel holder.
3. Remove air cleaner housing. See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust/Engine/Tune-up and Engine Performance Checks/Air Cleaner Housing/Service
and Repair/Air Cleaner Housing - Removal
4. Remove coupling pinch bolt securing intermediate shaft (2) to steering gear shaft (3). If necessary, a brass drift and hammer can be used to tap
intermediate shaft coupling off steering gear shaft.
5. Remove coupling pinch bolt securing intermediate shaft (2) to intermediate shaft extension (1).
6. Slide intermediate shaft off extension and remove from vehicle.
