Fuel Filter: Description and Operation

Fuel Gauge Unit With Filter

The first fuel filter in the system in located on the fuel gauge sending unit in the fuel tank.  It is a sock style filter and generally does not require service. 
It is replaceable if necessary.

Fuel Filter

The primary fuel filter is a dual purpose, paper element, sealed disposable type unit, located in the fuel line in the engine compartment, between the fuel
pump and carburetor.  The primary function of this filter is to filter fuel before it reaches the carburetor.  This filter is subject to contamination from dirt
and foreign matter in the fuel and should be replaced whenever it becomes clogged or restricted.  The secondary function of this filter is to allow fuel
vapors to return to the fuel tank through an orifice mounted in the return line.  The vapor return system is used to minimize vapor lock conditions.
