DISCUSSION
When reconditioning the A-500 transmission it is important that the transmission overrunning clutch cam (outer race) be correctly installed. When the
cam is incorrectly installed the transmission will exhibit the following symptoms:

Drive only in Manual Low and Reverse.

Transmission will lock up (stall the engine) when shifted from Manual Low to any other forward gear selection.
To prevent the possibility of installing the cam incorrectly during assembly the following procedure must be followed.
OVERRUNNING CLUTCH INSTALLATION:
Eleven of the twelve holes in the cam are threaded. The holes are countersunk on the rear face of the cam. Eleven bolts are used to retain the cam to the
case. Five short bolts are used to retain the cam to the case (these bolts pass only through the case). Six longer bolts are used to retain the overdrive
piston retainer to the case (these bolts pass through both the retainer and case and thread into the cam).

Locate the one non-thread (through hole). Place a small dab of paint on the top of the cam above the hole. Figure 1.
NOTE:
THE FACE OF THE CAM WITH THE COUNTERSUNK HOLES MUST FACE THE REAR OF THE CASE.
