Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair
Cleaning and Inspection
Vacuum Pump Components
1. Clean housing and push rods with solvent and dry with compressed air. Do not immerse vacuum pumps in solvent. Clean pump with a solvent
wetted cloth and wipe dry with a clean shop towel.
2. Examine drive gear, eccentric and bearing. Rotate the bearing in both directions and check for noise and roughness. If these components are in
good condition, set aside for reinstallation. Any of these parts that are worn or damaged will require replacement. Refer to PUMP GEAR,
ECCENTRIC AND BEARING REPLACEMENT.
3. Discard O-rings. Install new O-rings during assembly.
4. Examine pump push rods and bushings. Check push rod fit in bushings. Rods should slide freely with no discernible side play. Replace push rods
if scored or worn.
5. Pump bushings are not serviceable. If bushings are worn, scored or damaged, replace vacuum pump housing.
6. Check condition of pump housing and adapter bracket. Ensure that housing shaft and push rod bores are in good condition. Replace housing or
bracket if worn or damaged.
