Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair
Removal
Vacuum Pump/Power Steering Pump Assembly
NOTE:The vacuum pump/power steering pump is removed and replaced as an assembly.
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect booster vacuum hose at upper pump.
3. Disconnect fluid lines at power steering pump. Cap lines to prevent dirt entry and fluid spillage.
4. Remove bolts attaching pump assembly to block and lift assembly from engine.
5. Drain fluid from steering pump reservoir.
6. Remove gasket material from engine block and pump mounting surface.
Disassembly
1. Fabricate drive gear removal pin as described under SERVICE TOOLS.
Removing Drive Gear And Eccentric
2. Insert gear removal pin into threaded hole in pump eccentric shaft. Pin will pass through eccentric shaft and bottom against steering pump shaft.
3. Thread M14 bolt into shaft until it contacts removal pin. Tighten bolt against pin until drive gear, eccentric and bearing assembly comes off pump
shaft.
