Removal and Installation

American Motors Dual Pin Sliding Caliper

REMOVAL

1. Drain and discard approximately 2/3 of the brake fluid from the larger brake fluid reservoir.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
3. Using a suitable screwdriver, pry piston fully into caliper bore. If piston cannot be bottomed in cylinder bore using a screwdriver, use a

C-clamp.

4. Using a 7 mm Allen wrench, remove caliper mounting pins.
5. Lift caliper from anchor plate and off rotor.
6. Suspend caliper from coil spring with suitable wire to prevent damaging brake hose.
7. Hold anti-rattle clip against caliper anchor plate and remove outer brake shoe. Note position of anti-rattle clip for assembly reference.
8. Remove inner brake shoe from caliper anchor plate, then anti-rattle clip.
9. Wipe inside of caliper with dry, clean cloth and inspect piston bore for leakage. If leakage is present, refer to "Caliper Overhaul." Do not clean

caliper with compressed air as damage to the dust boot may result.

INSTALLATION

1. Inspect caliper and anchor plate abutment surfaces for rust and corrosion. If rust and corrosion are evident, clean surfaces with wire brush.
2. Lightly lubricate caliper and anchor plate abutment surfaces with Molydisulfide grease.
3. Install anti-rattle clip on trailing end of anchor plate. Ensure split end of clip faces away from rotor.
4. While holding anti-rattle clip in position, install inner and outer brake shoes.
5. Install caliper over rotor and into position on adapter.
6. Install caliper mounting pins. Torque to 26 ft. lbs. on 1982 - 84 models, or 30 ft. lbs. on 1985 - 87 models.
7. Fill master cylinder with clean brake fluid, then pump brake pedal several times to position caliper piston and brake shoes.
8. Install tire and wheel assembly, then lower vehicle.
9. Check brake fluid and refill as necessary. Before moving vehicle, ensure a firm brake pedal is obtained.

Bendix Sliding Caliper

The procedures to remove & install the brake shoe and lining assemblies are outlined under "Caliper Removal" and "Caliper Installation." It is not
necessary to disconnect the brake hose, however, use caution not to twist or kink hose.
