Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
American Motors Dual Pin Sliding Caliper
REMOVAL
1. Follow steps 1 through 3 of Removal procedure under "Brake Shoe and Linings, Replace."
2. Clean dirt from brake hose fittings.
3. Disconnect brake hose from caliper, then cap open lines to prevent entry of dirt.
4. Discard hose fitting washer.
5. Remove caliper following steps 4 through 8 of Removal procedure under "Brake Shoe and Linings, Replace."

DISASSEMBLY
1. Clean caliper exterior with suitable brake cleaning solvent.
2. Drain caliper, then place on clean work surface.
3. Pad caliper interior with clean shop cloths, then using compressed air, gently apply just enough air pressure into caliper fluid inlet hole to ease
piston out of bore. Do not place fingers in front of piston in an attempt to catch or protect it when applying compressed air. This could
result in serious injury.
4. Using a suitable screwdriver, pry dust boot from bore using care not to damage piston bore.
5. Using a pencil or other suitable wooden object, remove piston seal.
6. Remove bushings from caliper ear and discard.
INSPECTION
1. Clean all parts in brake cleaning solvent or brake fluid, then blow out caliper fluid passages with filtered compressed air.
2. Inspect caliper mounting pins for corrosion, replace as necessary. Do not attempt to clean or polish caliper mounting pins with abrasives as
protective plating will be removed.
3. Inspect caliper piston. If nicked, scratched, corroded or protective plating is worn off, replace. Do not attempt to refinish piston in any way as
protective plating will be removed, leading to corrosion and eventual failure.
4. Inspect caliper bore. If nicked, scratched, worn, cracked, or badly corroded, replace caliper. Minor corrosion and stains can be removed from
caliper bore with crocus cloth. Do not attempt to clean caliper bore with any other abrasives.
ASSEMBLY
1. Lubricate piston bore and seal with brake fluid, then work seal into piston groove using fingers only.
2. Lubricate piston with brake fluid, then slide metal portion of dust seal over open end of piston and pull rearward until seal boot seats in piston
groove, then push metal portion of seal forward until retainer is flush with rim and seal fold snaps into position.
3. Insert piston and seal assembly into bore. Do not unseat piston seal.
4. Using a hammer handle, press piston in bore.
5. Using tool No. J-33028, install dust seal in caliper housing.
6. Install bleeder screw and tighten securely.
7. Install replacement plastic sleeves and rubber bushings in caliper ears.
INSTALLATION
1. Follow steps 1 through 6 of Installation procedures under "Brake Shoe and Linings, Replace."
2. Install replacement hose fitting washer on brake hose, then install hose in caliper and torque to 25 ft. lbs.
