Parking Brake Cable: Adjustments
WITH ADJUSTMENT GAUGE J-23462
1. Make sure service brakes are properly adjusted.
2. Apply and release parking brake several times.
3. Raise and support vehicle at rear axle using jack stands.
4. Place parking brake in first notch from fully released position.
5. Place an inch lb. torque wrench on Parking Brake Cable Adjustment Gauge J-23462 and place gauge on from parking brake cable, centered
between cable housing ferrule and cable equalizer.
6. Apply 50 inch lbs. of torque and note indicator reading. If reading is not within the green band, adjust parking brake at equalizer until satisfactory
reading is obtained.
7. Release parking brake and check for brake drag. If brake drag is evident, inspect actuating cables and equalizer for freedom of movement and
proper operation. Inspect cable condition, especially at areas where cable passes near exhaust components. Correct as necessary and readjust
parking brake cable.
WITHOUT ADJUSTMENT GAUGE J-23462
1. With service brakes properly adjusted, set parking brake pedal on the first notch from fully released position.
2. Adjust front cable at equalizer to obtain 0.0001 - 0.005 inch (0.003 - 0.127 mm) clearance between parking brake lever strut and primary brake
shoe at both rear brakes.
3. Release pedal and check for rear wheel drag. The wheels should rotate freely.
