STEERING COLUMN NOISE WHEN MAKING TURNS
Information
The steering gear flexible coupling bolts on some 1983 Eagles may touch the steering gear housing when making turns. This could momentarily channel
normal power steering fluid flow sounds up through the column resulting in a "hissing" noise.
Noise elimination involves realigning the flexible coupling as outlined in the following procedure.
PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the left door step plate and kick panel. Then remove the accelerator pedal bracket and steering column lower trim cover.
2.
Loosen the toeboard and steering column mounting bracket bolts.
3.
Loosen the flexible coupling and steering gear mounting bolts.
4.
Move the steering gear up/down to align the steering gear stub shaft with the steering column intermediate shaft. Then tighten the steering gear
bolts to 88 N-m (65 ft.lbs.) torque and the flexible coupling bolts to 34 N-m (25 ft.lbs.) torque.
5.
Pull outward or push inward on the steering wheel to align the flexible coupling. The coupling must be flat and level (not saucer-shaped or
distorted) after alignment.
6.
Tighten the steering column mounting bracket bolt to 14 N-m (10 ft-lbs) torque and verify proper coupling alignment. The coupling must not touch
the steering gear housing at any point.
7.
Tighten the toeboard bolts to 11 N-m (8 ft.lbs.) torque.
8.
Install the accelerator pedal bracket, steering column lower trim cover, kick panel, and door step plate.
