Idle mixture adjustment should only be performed if the mixture adjusting screw has been replaced or removed during carburetor overhaul.
Mixture adjustments should not be made as a normal service adjustment.

Idle mixture adjustment should only be performed if mixture adjusting screws are replaced or removed during carburetor overhaul.

1. Remove carburetor from engine, drain fuel into a suitable container, and mount carburetor in a holding fixture.
2. Remove mixture adjusting screws as follows:

a. If equipped with a shield, carefully remove rivet head and rivet attaching shield to throttle body using a 1/8 inch drill bit.
b. If equipped with limiter caps, install a No. 10 sheet metal screw in center of cap and turn sheet metal screw until cap is removed.
c. On 1981-82 models, remove dowel pins using a drill bit and suitable punch.
d. Count number of turns required to lightly seat mixture adjusting screws, then remove screws.

3. Install mixture adjusting screws in throttle body. Turn screws in (clockwise) until lightly seated then back screws out the number of turns noted in

step 2.

4. Install carburetor on engine with air cleaner removed and related vacuum hoses plugged. Start engine and warm to operating temperature.
5. Install tachometer on engine following manufacturer's instructions. Set idle speed to specifications.
6. Turn mixture adjusting screws clockwise (leaner) until loss of RPM is indicated on tachometer.
7. Turn screws counter-clockwise (richer) until maximum RPM is obtained. Do not turn mixture adjusting screws beyond the point at which

maximum RPM is obtained.

8. Turn mixture adjusting screws in (clockwise) until specified drop in engine speed, Fig. 70, is obtained. Turn screws in small equal amounts until

specification is reached.

9. If engine speed differs more than 30 RPM from originally set curb idle speed, repeat steps 5-8.

10. Replace idle mixture adjustment limiters, taking care not to disturb mixture adjustment.
