Brake Shoe: Adjustments

These brakes, have self-adjusting mechanisms that assure correct lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the
brakes are applied as the car is moving rearward.

Although the brakes are self-adjusting, an initial adjustment is necessary after the brake shoes have been relined or replaced, or when the length of the
star wheel adjusting screw has been changed during some other service operation.

Frequent usage of an automatic transmission forward range to halt reverse vehicle motion may prevent the automatic adjusters from functioning,
thereby inducing low pedal heights. Should low pedal heights be encountered on these models, it is recommended that numerous forward and reverse
stops be made until satisfactory pedal height is obtained.

If a low pedal condition cannot be corrected by making numerous stops (provided the hydraulic system is free of air) it indicates that the
self-adjusting mechanism is not functioning. Therefore, it will be necessary to remove the brake drum, clean, free up and lubricate the
adjusting mechanisms. Then adjust the brakes as follows, being sure the parking brake is fully released.

ADJUSTMENT

1. Remove access slot cover from brake support plate.
2. Using brake adjusting tool or screwdriver, rotate adjuster screw until wheel is locked.
3. Back off adjuster screw one complete turn. To back off adjuster screw, insert a piece of 1/8 inch rod past adjuster screw and force adjusting

lever off adjuster screw.

4. Install rubber access slot cover.
5. Following the initial adjustment and final assembly, check the brake pedal height to insure brake operation. Then drive the car forward and

reverse, making 10 to 15 brake applications prior to road testing. This action balances the adjustment of the four brake units and raises the brake
pedal.
