IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT AND SOLE-VAC (THROTTLE POSITIONER) OPERATION 2.46 4-CYLINDER AND 4.2L 6-CYLINDER
ENGINES.
Information This I.S. Note provides information on idle adjustment and sole-vac operation that will help to avoid misadjustment or unnecessary sole-vac
replacement.
NOTE:
Do not attempt to adjust idle speed to improve idle quality until the vehicle has at least 100 miles on it. This period of operation allows the
engine to normalize (wear-in). Adjustments made prior to normalization will only have to be redone.
SIX-CYLINDER IDLE ADJUSTMENT
1.
Sole-Vac Vacuum Actuator Adjustment
a.
Disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the sole-vac vacuum actuator.
b.
Disconnect the sole-vac electrical connector.
c.
Connect an external vacuum source to the vacuum actuator and apply 10-15 inches (Hg.) of vacuum.
d.
Open throttle for at least 3.0 seconds (1200 rpm); then close throttle.
e.
Set the speed using the vacuum actuator adjustment screw on the throttle lever to obtain specified rpm.
f.
Disconnect the external vacuum source.
g.
Reconnect the sole-vac vacuum hose and electrical connector.
2.
Sole-Vac Holding Solenoid Adjustment
NOTE:
The sole-vac vacuum actuator adjustment should always precede the sole-vac solenoid adjustment.
a.
Disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the sole-vac vacuum actuator.
b.
Disconnect the sole-vac electrical connector.
c.
Energize the sole-vac holding solenoid with either of the two following methods:

Apply battery voltage ( + 12V) to the solenoid, or
^
Reconnect the sole-vac electrical connector and turn on the rear window defogger or turn on the air conditioner with the compressor
disconnected.
d.
Open throttle for at least 3.0 seconds (1200 rpm) to allow the sole-vac holding solenoid to fully extend.
e.
Set the speed using the 1/4" hex-head adjustment screw on the end of the sole-vac unit to obtain the specified rpm.
f.
Reopen the throttle above 1200 rpm to insure the correct holding position and reset speed if necessary.
g.
Reconnect the vacuum hose to the sole-vac actuator.
h.
Reconnect the sole-vac electrical connector if disconnected.
4-CYLINDER IDLE ADJUSTMENT
1.
Fully warm-up the engine.
2.
Choke Fast Idle Adjustment.
a.
Disconnect and plug the EGR valve vacuum hose.
b.
Position the fast idle adjustment screw on the second step of the fast idle cam with the transmission in neutral.
c.
Adjust fast idle speed to: 2000 rpm - Man. Trans./2300 rpm - Auto. Trans.
d.
Allow the throttle to return to normal curb idle and reconnect the EGR vacuum hose.
