Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Service and Repair
OPERATION
Models equipped with air conditioning and/or automatic transaxle are equipped with dual coolant thermo switch/electric cooling fan assemblies.
The switch is located within the radiator assembly. The switch allows the cooling fans to operate at high or low speeds depending on coolant
temperature.
When coolant temperature is above approximately 198 °F, but below 212 °F, the switch low speed contacts close. This energizes a low speed relay
which supplies battery voltage (in series) to each fan for low speed operation. In series, the fans receive approximately one half battery voltage.
When coolant temperature rises above approximately 212 °F, the high speed switch contacts close. This energizes the two high speed relays, which
supply battery voltage (in parallel) to each fan for high speed operation. In parallel, the fans receive full battery voltage.
On models equipped with air conditioning, the cooling fan operates continuously while the air conditioning system is being used. Fan speed is varied
according to coolant temperature during operation. However, a pressure switch in the air conditioning system will immediately switch the fans to high
speed operation, if system pressure exceeds 319 psi.
ELECTRIC COOLING FAN - REPLACE
Do not loosen cooling system pressure caps, hoses or bleed screws while coolant is hot and system pressurized. Allow system to cool before
servicing the system.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove hood, if necessary.
3. Remove grille attaching screws, then the grille.
4. Remove radiator support and face panel attaching screws, then the support and panel.
5. Remove mount attaching screws, then disconnect lower radiator hose. Drain coolant into a suitable container.
6. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses.
7. Disconnect electrical connectors from electric cooling fan and cooling fan thermo switch.
8. Remove fan assembly attaching bolts, then the fan assembly.
9. Reverse procedure to install.
