1988 MEDALLION ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT RETROFIT PROGRAM FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EQUIPPED
VEHICLES
A program has been developed to replace the factory installed ECU P/N 7700 736 396 on automatic transmission equipped Medallions.
As you know, the 1988 Medallion has been subject to some driveability characteristics that generally can be traced to the ECU. At this time ECU
availability is limited, therefore we will conduct the second phase of this program as follows:

First Phase - Retail Customer (In Progress)
As of August 21, 1987 slightly over 6,000 of the subject vehicles have been sold to retail customers. Approximately 3,900 of the updated
ECU's have been shipped to dealers. This quantity of ECU's should be sufficient to satisfy customers with driveability concerns.
For all future orders, related to retail customers, refer to the Medallion Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Usage Chart (see attachment).

Second Phase - Vehicles Sold from Dealer Stock
The second phase is to install updated ECU's on vehicles sold from dealer stock, prior to delivery. See the Medallion Electronic Control Unit
(ECU) Usage Chart attached.
Note:
All vehicles ordered by dealers on or after July 27, 1987 are already equipped with updated ECU's.
To begin this program all dealers are instructed to use updated ECU's presently in their inventory before ordering additional ECU's.
If you do not have updated ECU's in your inventory, we request that as a guideline when ordering additional ECU's, you order no more than
the quantity equal to the number of Medallion models with automatic transmissions sold in the last two weeks. This procedure is being
implemented to prevent undue depletion of our limited supply of ECU's.
All stock orders for ECU's currently on file with your PDC will be cancelled. Dealers will have to periodically reevaluate their requirements
and reorder according to the new guidelines until our supply improves.
Service Procedures
1.
Retail Customer - Inspection Requirements
When a customer reports the following conditions, check all electrical systems with the MS 1700 tester.
^
erratic acceleration during the first two to five minutes of initial warm-up
^
rough idle at normal operating temperature
^
uneven acceleration at normal operating temperature
Follow the Electronic Control Unit Preliminary Inspection/Diagnostic Checklist (P/N 8980 010 563). If there are faults indicated, repair them as
necessary. If there are no faults indicated, replace the ECU as described under ECU Replacement below.
