Windshield Washer Switch: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove attaching screws from lower steering column cover.
3. On models equipped with cruise control, pull down on wire located at the froward edge of the lower cover. This will pull the spring

loaded commutator brush back into its housing. If the commutator brush is not pulled into its housing before the lower cover is removed,
the brush will be broken off.

4. Remove upper and lower steering housing column covers.
5. If only one switch requires replacement (the combination switch includes the light switch, turn signal and windshield wiper switch), remove

attaching screws securing that particular switch.

6. Disconnect electrical connectors.
7. If the entire switch assembly requires replacement, proceed as follows:

a. Remove attaching screws located on either side of the steering wheel cover.
b. Remove steering wheel cover.
c. Place an alignment mark on the steering wheel and shaft before removing steering wheel.
d. Loosen but do not remove steering wheel locknut.
e. Do not use a hammer to tap against the end of the steering column. The inner column will collapse if struck.
f.

Grasp steering wheel and give it a quick pull.

g. When the steering wheel comes loose, remove steering wheel locknut and steering wheel.
h. Remove attaching screw and switch holder bracket.

8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. When installing steering wheel, place two drops of Loctite 271 or equivalent onto steering wheel locknut threads.
b. On models equipped with cruise control, pull down on wire located at the forward edge of the lower cover. This will pull the spring loaded

commutator brush back into its housing. If the commutator brush is not pulled into its housing before the lower cover is removed/installed,
the brush will be broken off.
