Vacuum Spark Delay Valve: Description and Operation
Reverse Delay Valve

PURPOSE

On some models, the vacuum spark control reverse delay valve is added to the vacuum advance circuit to provide improved driveability when
engine is cold and to lower emission of hydrocarbons. When a cold engine is started, manifold vacuum is applied to the distributor vacuum
advance unit. As engine speed is increased, manifold vacuum drops and distributor vacuum advance is lost. 

OPERATION

To prevent the retarding of the spark advance, a one-way check valve is installed in the vacuum line. With this check valve, the distributor will
remain in a full advance mode until the spark CTO is switched to ported vacuum after the engine has reached operating temperature. The vacuum
trapped by the check valve will slowly bleed down when the engine is not operating.
