Idle Speed: Adjustments

1. Remove air cleaner and plug associated vacuum hoses. Disconnect and plug purge hose at canister and deceleration valve supply hose.
2. Connect positive lead of dwell meter to terminal 6 on diagnostic connector and connect negative lead of meter to terminal 13 on connector, Fig.
76.
3. With meter on 6 cylinder scale, meter pointer should oscillate covering a maximum spread of 15° within the 10°-50° range. If not, engine is not
warmed up sufficiently or a problem exists in Mixture Feedback System.
4. On models equipped with A/C:
a. Adjust "solenoid off" idle speed to specifications by turning throttle stop screw.
b. Place A/C control in on position and open throttle momentarily to allow solenoid to fully extend.
c. Adjust "solenoid on" idle speed to specifications by turning solenoid adjusting screw, then place A/C control in off position.
5. On models without A/C:
a. Adjust curb idle speed to specifications by turning solenoid adjusting screw.
b. Disconnect wiring harness connector to solenoid and adjust low idle speed to specifications by turning throttle stop screw.
c. Reconnect solenoid wire.
6. Place automatic transmission selector in park (manual transmission in neutral) and disconnect vacuum hose at EGR valve.
7. With fast idle adjusting screw on highest step of fast idle cam, adjust fast idle to specifications.
8. Reconnect all vacuum hoses and replace air cleaner.
