SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Excessive brake pedal travel required to disengage speed control or intermittent speed control drop out.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
If a customer indicates that excessive brake pedal travel is required to disengage the speed control, the problem may be caused by a misadjusted stop
lamp switch. If the customer complains that the speed control intermittently "drops out," it too may be caused by a misadjusted stop lamp switch.
The proper stop lamp adjusting procedure is as follows:
1.
Measure the height of the brake pedal as outlined on Page 05-09 in the Group 5 - Brakes Section of the 1989 Import Engine, Chassis, and Body
Service Manual. If it is not within specification, follow the adjustment procedure as outlined in the service manual.
2.
Loosen the stop lamp switch locking nut and then adjust the stop lamp switch by screwing it in or out until there is between 10-15 millimeters (.4
to .6 inch) of brake pedal travel before the stop lamps illuminate.
3.
Tighten the stop lamp switch lock nut.
4.
Start the engine and step on the brake pedal about ten times with normal pressure. Check to see that the stop lamps do not illuminate until the
brake pedal is depressed between 10-15 millimeters.
