SYMPTOM/CONDITION

The torque converter on this car is not a full time lock-up torque converter.  In normal highway operation, the torque converter will lock and unlock
about once every second. This results in a normal three percent torque converter slippage which reduces the amount of engine vibration transmitted into
the chassis of the vehicle. If this lock/unlock action is too abrupt, it may cause a surge between 45 and 55 mph.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure outlines replacing the transmission fluid with Mopar 7176 ATF.

1.

Remove the oil cooler return hose from the transmission. This is the hose that exits the bottom left side (driver's side) of the radiator.

2.

To drain the transmission fluid, place the hose into a suitable container and with the transmission selector in neutral, start the engine and let it
idle.

NOTE:

THE TRANSMISSION MUST BE IN NEUTRAL AND NOT PARK OR THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT DRAIN PROPERLY.

3.

Shut off the engine when the fluid stops coming out of the hose. DO NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO RUN FOR MORE THAN ONE MINUTE,
EVEN IF FLUID IS STILL FLOWING FROM HOSE.

4.

Remove the transmission oil pan and differential drain plug. Allow the fluid to drain out of the unit.

5.

Clean the mounting surface of the oil pan and using a new gasket, reinstall the oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 96 in.lbs. (11 N-m). Using a new
gasket, reinstall the differential drain plug and tighten to 23 ft.lbs. (33 N-m).

6.

Lower the car and install six quarts of Mopar type 7176 ATF into the transmission.

7.

To purge the old fluid from the torque converter, again place the cooler hose in a suitable container. Place the transmission in neutral, start the
engine and then let it idle. Stop the engine when the fluid stops coming out of the hose. DO NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO RUN FOR MORE
THAN ONE MINUTE, EVEN IF FLUID IS STILL FLOWING FROM HOSE.
