SERVICE PROCEDURE
Gasket Replacement only
When only the transmission case gasket is being replaced and a joint sheet type gasket is being replaced with a rubber-coated metal gasket, use the
following procedure to set the preload.
1.
Remove the converter housing and remove the spacers from the differential and then remove the spacers from the transfer shaft (only if the "both
end support" type transfer shaft used).
2.
Measure the thickness of the spacer that was removed and then select a spacer from the parts kit that is 0.10 mm thicker. Install the thicker spacer
in the housing.
3.
Clean the gasket mounting surface of the transmission case and apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly.
4.
Install the rubber-coated metal gasket and then install the converter housing and tighten the bolts to 19-23 N-m (14-16 ft.lbs.) torque.

Internal Component Replacement
When internal transmission components, (i.e., converter housing, differential, etc.) are replaced the procedure for establishing end play (preload) for the
differential and transfer shafts is as follows.
1.
Remove the converter housing and remove the spacers from the differential and then remove the spacers from the transfer shaft (only if the "both
end support" type transfer shaft is used).
2.
Place 10 mm (.40 in.)-long, 3 mm (.12 in.)-dia. pieces of solder at the two locations in the differential assembly as shown in Figure 2.

Place two 10 mm (.40 in.)-long, 3 mm (.12 in.)-dia. pieces of solder at the locations in the converter housing as shown in Figure 3. Install the
converter housing without the case gaskets and tighten the bolts to 19-23 N-m (14-16 ft.lbs) torque.
4.
Remove the converter housing bolts and remove the housing and take out the solder.
