Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Rear Axle Hub Carrier Service
1. Remove stabilizer bar assembly as outlined under "Stabilizer Bar, Replace in the "Rear Suspension section of the "Concord, Intrepid & Vision
section.
2. Remove lower arm assembly as outlined under "Lower Arm, Replace in the "Rear Suspension section of the "Concord, Intrepid & Vision section.
3. Mount lower arm assembly in a suitable vice then remove rear axle hub using a slide hammer and adapter tool Nos. MB990241 and MB990211,
or equivalents.
4. Remove wheel bearing snap ring then press wheel bearing race off of axle hub using bearing remover tool No. MB990560, or equivalent.
5. Using bearing removal tool No. MB990938 and MB990934, or equivalents, remove wheel bearing from lower arm.
6. Check rear hub spline for wear or damage and dust shield for deformation or damage.
7. Using a suitable press and bearing installation tool Nos. MB991400, MB991401, and MB991411, or equivalents, press rear wheel bearing into
lower arm.
8. Using a suitable press and bearing installation tool Nos. MB991400, MB991401, and MB991411, or equivalents, press axle hub into bearing in
lower arm.
9. Inspect wheel bearing starting torque as described under "Rear Wheel Bearing Rotation Sliding Resistance Check, in this section.
10. Check rear wheel bearing endplay as described under "Rear Wheel Bearing Endplay Check, in this section
11. If starting torque and rear hub endplay are not with in limits with nut torqued to 145-188 ft. lbs., check for correct installation of the bearing, rear
hub and/or lower arm.
12. If the bearing, rear hub and/or lower arm have been installed correctly, replace bearing and repeat this procedure.
