Remove the attachment bolts for the P/S pump bracket and discard the bracket (Figure 3). Install the new bracket p/n MR403066 and torque the
bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).

4.

On A/C equipped vehicles, remove the idler pulley by removing the two attachment bolts and discard the assembly. Install the new idler pulley p/n
MR398887 and torque the attachment bolts to 29 - 41 Nm (21 - 30 ft. lbs.).

NOTE:

THE NEW IDLER PULLEY WAS INCORPORATED ON VEHICLES BUILT AFTER FEB. 2, 1998 (MDH0202XX).

5.

Install the P/S pump onto the bracket. If the vehicle is A/C equipped, tighten the pump attachment bolts to 39 Nm ((29 ft. lbs.). If the vehicle is not
A/C equipped, do not fully tighten the pump attachment bolts until adjusting the belt tension.

Install the power steering belt and adjust the tension with a tension gauge at the middle of the belt to 93 - 115 lbs.. On non A/C equipped vehicles,
tighten the bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.). On A/C equipped vehicles, use the idler pulley adjustment bolt to achieve proper belt tension.

NOTE:

CORRECT BELT TENSION IS CRITICAL TO APPROPRIATE OPERATION. IF USING A NEW BELT, IT SHOULD BE TENSIONED TO
THE UPPER END OF THE SPECIFICATION. AFTER TENSIONING, RUN THE ENGINE AND RE-CHECK THE TENSION. LOW TENSION
WILL RESULT IN NOISE OR BELT LOSS AND EXCESS TENSION WILL RESULT IN ABNORMAL WEAR TO THE PUMP PULLEY
SHAFT.

7.

Recheck alignment before returning the vehicle to the customer. If the misaligned condition is not totally corrected, proceed with procedure "B".

NOTE: 

THE ENGINE MUST BE MOMENTARILY STARTED TO RE-ALIGN THE BELT. RECHECK BELT ALIGNMENT WITH THE ENGINE
NOT RUNNING.

Procedure B

(ALIGNS PIS BRACKET WITH SHIMS)

1.

Remove the power steering belt using the procedures listed in the appropriate service manual.

2.

Remove the power steering pump from its bracket. Hang pump to one side.
