IDLE - ROLLING OR STALL - DECEL STALL (2.3L EFI)
LIGHT TRUCK 1985-86 RANGER, AEROSTAR
Engines with manual transmissions may develop an idle roll, decel or idle stall condition.
The clutch engage switch or the neutral gear switch may develop an intermittent or open circuit due to the switch or pin push out condition on the hard
shell connector. An open circuit in this signal path will interrupt the activation of the idle speed control circuit and result in the above concern.
Diagnosis Procedure
With the A/C heat selector in the "off" position, perform the following key-on/engine-off self-tests and record service codes.
Expected
Test Condition
Result
Clutch pedal "up", transmission in Neutral
Code 11
Clutch pedal "up", transmission in any gear
Code 67
Clutch pedal "down", transmission in any gear
Code 11
Clutch pedal "down", transmission in Neutral
Code 11
Obtaining service code 67 during test No. 1, No. 3, or No.4 or not finding code 67 during test No.2, indicates a concern with the Clutch Engage Switch
or Neutral Gear Switch. Investigate condition of both switches and wiring (pin pushouts) and repair or replace as required. (Go to Engine/Emission
Diagnostics, Volume H - Quick Test and follow as instructed.)
