Spark Plug - Replacement Procedure

SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE (3.0L)
LIGHT TRUCK 1986 AEROSTAR
The purpose of this article is to provide the procedure for replacing spark plugs in the 1986 Aerostar with 3.0L V6 engine.
Replacement Procedure
1.
Open hood.
2.
Disconnect battery cable from negative (-) terminal.
3.
Remove air cleaner cover and disconnect air inlet tube at throttle body.
4.
Remove plastic shield from throttle body (3 push pins).
5.
Disconnect accelerator cable ball stud and speed control cable (if equipped) from throttle body.
6.
Remove accelerator cable mounting bracket from throttle body (2 bolts).
7.
Remove oil fill tube (nut and clamp).
8.
Disconnect spark plug wires with a twistingpulling motion using spark plug wire removal tool T74P-6666-A to avoid damaging wires.
9.
Remove spark plugs.
NOTE:
Use of a flexhandle driver or swivel (universal) socket and extension is necessary for removing the two rearmost (No. 3 and No. 6) spark plugs
. Access to the two front right plugs (No. 1 and No. 2) can also be achieved through the right front fender opening.
10.
Set gap on new spark plugs to specification as shown on the Vehicle Emission Controll Information Decal (under hood).
11.
Install new plugs. Use of rubber hose over tip of spark plugs will assist hard-starting plug threads.
12.
Coat the inside of the spark plug wire boots with silicone dielectric compound (Motorcraft WA-10 or equivalent) and install wires on plugs.
13.
Install accelerator bracket to throttle body and accelerator (and speed control) cable ball studs.
14.
Install plastic sight shield.
15.
Install oil fill tube.
16.
Install air inlet tube to throttle body and air cleaner cover. Replace air filter element if at 30,000 miles.
17.
Connect battery and close hood.
WARNING:
Do not perform this operation on a hot engine.
