IDLE POOR QUALITY - OPEN OR SHORT IN VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT - 3.0L
ROLLING IDLE - OPEN OR SHORT IN VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT - 3.0L
POOR FUEL ECONOMY - OPEN OR SHORT IN VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT - 3.0L
LACK OF TRANSMISSION CONVERTER LOCK-UP CONTROL - OPEN OR SHORT IN VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT - 3.0L
LIGHT TRUCK 1986 AEROSTAR
The 3.0L Aerostar may experience:

Poor idle quality
^
Rolling idle
^
Lack of transmission converter lock-up control
^
Poor fuel economy (due to lack of transmission converter lock-up control).
The subject symptoms may be caused by:
1.
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) malfunction, 2. Vehicle Speed Sensor not connected, 3. Vehicle Speed Sensor harness open or, 4. Vehicle Speed
Sensor shorted to power.
To isolate the above causes, first perform the following found in the 1986 Car/Truck Shop Manual, Volume H.

Use the applicable Diagnostic Routines in Section 2.

The Diagnostic by Symptoms Chart in Section 20.
If the fault is not found there, perform the diagnostic procedures in the following pinpoint tests.
NOTE:
The pinpoint tests should be inserted at the end of the Pinpoint Test T portion of Section 21, Volume H.
